I’ve been wanting to talk about this topic for a while! A lot of people come into the salon specifically asking for a Deva cut, a CADO cut, or something else. They name it almost like they’re asking for a specific hairstyle.

It always throws me off a little.

But I get why they’re asking! Those names get thrown around so much in the curly hair world. It can be confusing.

The truth is, the Deva cut, the CADO cut, REZO cut, Ouidad cut…they’re not curly haircuts you need to request by name. They’re the cutting techniques we use to create the haircut result you want.

What matters more is what you want your hair to do. So let’s set the record straight once and for all, and talk about what you can ask for that will actually help your curly hair specialist more.

What’s the difference between a Deva cut vs REZO cut vs all the others?

Ok, so if these are techniques, not curly haircut styles, then why do they exist and why do curly hair stylists talk about them so much?

Well, cutting hair is very artistic. When we’re first taught how to cut hair, our teachers show us things like where to position our hands and what angles to use. Then, when we decide to focus on curly hair, we have to learn a whole new art form, because now we’re not cutting hair that is straight and uniform. We’re cutting hair where no two curl patterns are exactly the same, and no two people want the exact same thing at the end. 

So, us curly stylists have come up with different ways to cut, and a few people have trademarked their cutting techniques. That’s what Deva, REZO, Forever Curls, and all the others are. Trademarked techniques.

And because I’m certified in most of these techniques (Deva cut, Forever Curls, and CADO), I can confidently tell you these names don’t matter on your part nearly as much as people think they do.

Think of It Like This

Think of each of these “cuts” like brands of paintbrushes. You wouldn’t walk up to Bob Ross and say, “I looked up brushes online. Make me some happy trees and use a Taklon Fan brush.”

Because what does that even mean? Bob’s the painter. He knows what brush he uses to make happy trees…but that’s exactly what you’re doing when you ask your hair stylist to only give you a Deva cut or an Ouidad cut.

That’s why it throws me off a little. 

Now, I’m not saying the techniques don’t matter at all. They do! Sometimes these techniques are interchangeable, but not always. Some build more volume, some keep more weight, and some make more sense when length retention is the goal. Then you have some, like an Ouidad cut, which are wet cutting techniques, while others are dry hair cutting techniques.

But that’s for us to know which is the best one to use on you. When you lock your hairstylist into using one specific technique…you may be requesting the wrong brush for your canvas.

I thought it would be fun to show you a few real examples! These are three of my clients.

Can you guess which technique I used on which client? 

Probably not! And that’s kind of the point.

Two of these young ladies were cut using the Forever Curls technique, and one was cut using CADO. They all got to keep their length. Two wanted a little more volume. And each of these ladies had different curl patterns (multiple curl patterns per girl, actually!).

Even though they had different techniques used on them, they all still walked out feeling confident, looking amazing, and with beautiful curls. 

Because the technique is just how I got there. The end goal was always the haircut that gave them their ideal look.

That kind of information gives me way more to work with than a technique name does. Once I know the result you want, I can look at your hair and choose the best way to get you there.
