If you’ve ever looked at someone with gorgeous, long, curly hair and thought…must be nice – my hair could never! You’re not alone. So many of us struggle with wanting length, but I have a secret for you. A ton of the girlies out there with long curly hair are actually wearing curly hair extensions! 

Which means you can have long, voluminous hair too.

And, yes. There are actual curly extensions out there. NOT straight hair that you have to somehow curl and blend in. Not a clip-in ponytail that’s sort of the right texture (if nobody looks too closely). 

High-quality curly hair extensions. Ones that can be matched to your curl patterns and hair color so it looks like it’s your real hair. 

I do a lot of curly hair extensions in our Jacksonville curly hair salon, so believe me when I tell you that extensions have come a long way in the past several years. Five, ten years ago? It didn’t exist in our industry. But now it does.

So let’s get into how long we’re talking and all the details you need to know before deciding if extensions are right for you.

Ok, So How Long Are We Talking?

I know you’re dying to know this first! Right now, we can go up to about 22 inches. That puts your curls somewhere around mid-back. 

If that feels too long, I can always cut it to where you prefer. But most of my clients have been trying to grow out their hair for so, so long, so they’ve loved it.

Also, worth mentioning – what we use in the salon is 100% real human hair. Hand-sewn and hand-woven. It’s beautiful. They come in a ton of curl patterns and colors, so it looks natural and blends in like it belongs. 

That quality matters because the goal isn’t for someone to look at you and immediately think, Oh, extensions.

The goal is for them to wonder how the heck your hair got so long.

What To Expect When You Come In For Extensions

First, we have to find your perfect hair fit. 

Curly hair extensions aren’t a one-texture-fits-all. Your extensions need to work with the curl patterns you already have. So I always have people come in for a consultation so we can look at your curl pattern, your color, how much length you want, and give you some education on what maintenance looks like..

We’ll order the hair during your consultation and pre-book your actual appointment for when they’re expected to come in. Once your package is here, the actual installation with my current method usually takes between 3.5 – 4.5 hours, depending on how many rows you need. (But stay tuned for next month where I have big news about that time period.)

Some Things To Know Before You Get Curly Hair Extensions

I love curly hair extensions, but they’re not for everyone. It’s not the same as having natural hair. Getting extensions means changing up your hair routine, and I know for some of my one-wash-day-a-week curlfriends – that’s a non-negotiable. 

So, let’s talk about what you need to know before you say yes.

How much does it cost?

This is the biggest question I get. The hair itself usually ranges from $1,800 to $2,800 and can last anywhere from 8-12 months with good care. Installation is currently $225 per row, plus your maintenance appointments.

So yes, they’re an investment. But if having long curls is really important to you, then it may be worth it. Also, remember – extensions aren’t forever. We use them until you get to your goal length. That way you can feel confident, beautiful, and enjoy your curls in the awkward in-between time while growing your natural hair out.

Do I need to come into the salon more often?

Yes, you can expect to be in the salon every 4 to 8 weeks. That’s because as your hair grows, your extensions will move down. Maintenance appointments mean we’ll move your rows back up, wash everything, and make sure your natural curls are still doing well underneath.

Do extensions damage your natural hair?

They can if they’re installed incorrectly! Extensions give you that length while your natural hair continues growing underneath. When they’re installed and cared for correctly, your own curls should still be protected in the process. But extensions add tension, so training and experience matter. If they’re installed wrong or too tight, it can damage your hair. I’m currently the only stylist certified to do extensions in the salon, and your natural hair health is my main concern. I’ll let you know during our assessment whether your hair can handle extensions. 

Can kids get extensions?

Yes! My youngest extension client was 10 years old. I won’t go into details, but her mom stepped up into Mama mode when she saw her daughter needed a confidence boost. And it did help a ton. Age doesn’t matter. What matters more is whether you or your kiddo is ready to keep up with the care at home.
