Some appointments just stay with me, and Evelyn’s was one of them.

Evelyn is in that middle school/early high school age where you’re figuring out who you are, what your style is, and how you want to feel when you look in the mirror. She had been wanting to book an appointment with me for a little while, but her mom wanted to make sure she was ready to actually take care of her hair herself before booking a consultation and education session with a professional curly hair stylist in Jacksonville.
And honestly? Fair. I’m a mom too, and I plan on doing exactly the same thing if my kids ever want to see someone else! I remember a time when I wasn’t ready to take care of my curls, and how it completely changed my life and self-confidence when I was finally ready.
When they came in, they were both as sweet as freakin’ corn! We sat down for our Signature Curl Experience and went over what she was hoping to achieve for her curls, her styling preferences, and how she was caring for her curls at the time.
That’s when I realized Evelyn’s biggest struggle was that her hair always felt flat. She didn’t realize that part of the reason was she was brushing it downward, which was keeping it close to her head and not letting her curls expand the way they wanted to.
The good news? That’s fixable.
And y’all…before I was even fully done, she looked at her hair and said, “I could just leave now. It looks so good.”
That right there? That is my favorite kind of appointment.
A good curly haircut goes a long way, and for Evelyn, that was a big part of it. She wanted to keep enough length to still braid her hair, so we worked with that. We added layers to help build shape and volume when she wore her hair down, without taking away the length she still wanted.
But the haircut was only part of the transformation.
We also went over how to actually take care of her curls, what products do what, how they work, and how to use them to get the look she wanted. She and her mom both wanted her curls to have more volume, so I showed them how to get that through the haircut, the right products, and how to diffuse for volume. (Psst…did you know your diffuser could help give your curls more volume? It’s all in the technique!)
Once we used products that allowed her hair to expand instead of flattening it down, everything started to click.
She loved it. Her mom loved it. And the next day, her mom texted me to thank me, which just made me smile even bigger.

These are some of my favorite appointments because this is where confidence starts. Helping young girls feel good about the hair God gave them matters so much to me. I always think, man…I wish there had been someone like this for me when I was younger.
I didn’t really get that experience until adulthood, and I know how much it would have meant to have someone show me earlier, “Hey, this is how your hair works. This is beautiful. Let’s teach you how to care for it.”
That is why appointments like Evelyn’s mean so much to me.
